Why InfraredTested Exists
The infrared wellness market is booming. Red light therapy masks, full-body panels, sauna blankets, PEMF mats — consumers are spending hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars on devices backed by big marketing claims and very little independent testing.
We started InfraredTested because we were frustrated. Frustrated by "review" sites that had never touched the products they recommended. Frustrated by affiliate content that ranked devices based on commission rates, not quality. Frustrated by the lack of real data in an industry that desperately needs it.
So we built something different.
Our promise is simple: Every device we review has been tested in-house for a minimum of 30 days. We measure what matters — irradiance, EMF levels, heat output, build quality, and real-world results. We publish what we find, whether brands like it or not.
What We Cover
InfraredTested focuses on four core categories of infrared and light-based wellness devices:
- Red Light Therapy Masks — LED face masks using red (630–660nm) and near-infrared (830–850nm) wavelengths for skin rejuvenation, acne treatment, and anti-aging.
- Red Light Therapy Panels — Tabletop and full-body panels delivering therapeutic red and NIR light for recovery, pain relief, and overall wellness.
- Sauna Blankets — Portable infrared sauna blankets for at-home heat therapy, detoxification, and relaxation.
- PEMF Mats — Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy mats for recovery, sleep, and circulation support.
How We Test: Our Methodology
Our testing methodology is designed to give consumers the data they need to make informed purchasing decisions. Here's exactly what we do:
1. Acquisition
We purchase the majority of our test devices at retail price using our own funds. In some cases, brands provide review units — but this never influences our ratings or recommendations. We disclose the source of every device we test.
2. 30-Day Testing Protocol
Every device is tested for a minimum of 30 consecutive days under real-world conditions. This means daily use, not a single unboxing video. We track performance, comfort, durability, and any issues that emerge over time.
3. Instrumented Measurements
We use calibrated instruments to measure the things that actually matter:
- Irradiance (mW/cm²) — Measured at standardized distances using a solar power meter calibrated for red/NIR wavelengths.
- EMF Output (mG & V/m) — Tested with a TriField TF2 at multiple distances. We flag any device that exceeds safe exposure thresholds.
- Heat Distribution — Measured using infrared thermography across the treatment surface. Uneven heating is a common issue we catch.
- Power Consumption (W) — Measured at the wall to verify manufacturer claims and calculate value-per-watt.
- Build Quality — Assessed for material quality, assembly fit, cord durability, and long-term wear patterns.
4. Comparative Scoring
Every device receives a composite score out of 100, weighted across performance (40%), build quality (20%), safety (20%), and value (20%). We update scores when new competitors launch or when we identify long-term durability issues.
5. Safety Monitoring
We continuously monitor the CPSC recall database, FDA notices, and consumer reports for safety issues related to products we've reviewed. When a recall is issued, we update our reviews immediately and publish dedicated safety alerts.
Our editorial independence is non-negotiable. No brand can pay for a higher rating. No advertiser influences our recommendations. We earn revenue through affiliate commissions when readers purchase products through our links — but our rankings are based solely on our testing data.
